The National Archives of India (NAI) has significantly enriched its repository of historical records with the acquisition of the private papers of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The collection, donated by members of Dr. Kalam’s family, offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the life and legacy of one of India’s most revered statesmen and scientists.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the collection includes original correspondences, Dr. Kalam’s passport, Aadhaar card, PAN card, detailed tour reports, several original photographs, and transcripts of lectures delivered at various universities and organizations.
The formal handover took place in the presence of Dr. Kalam’s niece, Dr. APJM Nazema Maraikayar, and grandnephews A.P.J.M.J. Sheik Saleem and A.P.J.M.J. Sheik Dawood. Also in attendance was his nephew A.P.J.M. Jainulabudeen. The agreement was signed by Arun Singhal (IAS), Director-General of the National Archives of India, and Dr. Maraikayar, further cementing the collection’s place in the national record.
The National Archives of India, operating under the Public Records Act of 1993, is the official custodian of the non-current records of the Government of India. In addition to government files, it maintains a rich and diverse collection of private papers of eminent Indians from various walks of life, serving as a vital resource for researchers, historians, and the general public.
Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), popularly known as the “Missile Man of India,” served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. A native of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he rose to national prominence for his pioneering work in India’s missile and nuclear programs, particularly his involvement in the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests. His scientific contributions through institutions such as DRDO and ISRO have had a lasting impact on India’s defense and space capabilities.
Awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, Dr. Kalam was not only a distinguished scientist but also a beloved educator and author. His books—including Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020—continue to inspire generations of Indians, especially the youth. Fondly remembered as the “People’s President,” he remained committed to education and youth empowerment until his final moments, passing away on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture.
